Poll Finds Only 6% Favor Starting Robbo In England Goal

A Soccer Source poll conducted in the days leading up to today's Estonia game found only 6% of respondents in favor of starting Paul Robinson in goal for the English national team. Aston Villa's Scott Carson (left) was the poll's favored replacement, tallying 40% of respondents' votes, followed by West Ham's Robert Green (26%), England's actual #2 David James (20%) and the elusive "somebody else" (6%). Zero percent (0%, as in nobody) wanted Wigan's Chris Kirkland.

Did Steve McClaren listen? Nooooo. Robbo started for England today and was a bit shaky on at least one save, according to the BBC's report of the game. (I did not actually watch the game myself, because it wasn't broadcast in New York, though three other Euro qualifiers were, as I previously noted). And that was Estonia. He's sure to have a busier time at Moscow on Wednesday. With a win, England qualify for the main event in Austria and Switzerland next summer. We shall see.

  1. I haven't been following as much this year, but what is the current status of to Ben Foster? He put in a solid year last year with Watford, with not much of a squad in front of him. It looks like he injured a knee somewhere around June. I thought, at one point, he was getting some consideration from the English National Team. Do we know the status of his recovery? Will United loan him out again once he is healthy? Will he ever get another look from the national squad? I thought he was good enough last year. I hope he regains his form.

  2. yes, Foster is injured and will be out another four months at least. Funny you ask because I just saw this today (about him maybe leaving Old Trafford when he comes back):
