Walter Hines, a member of the New York Red Bulls' Under 18 squad, was a 'Face in the Crowd' in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated. The Franklin D. Roosevelt High School senior scored 10 goals, had 12 assists and was named to New York City's Public School Athletic League Exceptional Seniors Team this season. The Costa Rica-born Hines was a Parade All-America last year and was recently featured on si.com's high school section (from whom the photo was taken without permission).
I think this is his first mention in the print issue of the magazine. Faces in the crowd is a long-running SI segment that details significant achievements by (usually young) amateur athletes. Famous past Faces include Tiger Woods, Greg LeMond, Carl Lewis and John McEnroe, to name just a few. Brad Friedel is probably the best-recognized soccer name to have been featured.
